About Us - Corporate Responsibility

Corporate Responsibility

At Aviva, we're committed to doing business responsibly. We are very conscious of the impact we have on the people we deal with, the environment we operate within and society as a whole.

To put our business principles into practice, we must deliver on our responsibilities to:

  • Our customers. We achieve this by listening to their views, treating them fairly, and offering the products and guidance that help them make decisions appropriate to their needs. This will help us achieve our vision of being the world's most trusted savings, investments and insurance provider.
  • Our colleagues. Our people make Aviva what it is. We value the expertise and commitment that all our colleagues bring to their work, and are committed to offering development opportunities to help people make the most of their talent. We promote well-being, diversity and equality in the workplace and always listen to the feedback we receive.
We're also committed to treating our colleagues with integrity, honesty and professionalism at all times. We recognise their individuality and that everyone is different.
  • Our communities. We're conscious of the role we play in the communities we operate in. Our numerous community programmes focus on key areas such as financial education/literacy, climate change and life trauma. In addition, as the proud sponsor of UK Athletics, we get involved with many other local sporting initiatives and provide funding to various charities.
  • The environment - especially climate change. Managing and reducing our impact on the environment continues to be a priority for our business. In addition to reducing our consumption and sourcing zero emissions electricity, we have become the first carbon neutral insurer covering worldwide operations.

Fact box:

  • Thanks to our diverse approach, we were the only insurer named in the Stonewall Equality Index of Britain's Top 100 Employers this year.
  • Our volunteer programme enabled colleagues to give 79,900 volunteering hours during 2009 - this figure has nearly doubled since 2006.
  • In 2009 we invested over £8 million in community and charitable activities around the world.
  • We were the first insurer (in 2006) to become carbon neutral in our worldwide operations.
  • 100% of our electricity is purchased from suppliers providing renewable and zero emission electricity generated by wind, solar, biomass and hydro sources.
