When I started my placement, I had limited IT knowledge. I’m studying Economics with Finance at university and my A-Levels were in Biology, Chemistry and Maths. However, this has been far from a hindrance. In fact, I’m able to look at things with a different perspective. Aviva values that.
There is so much potential in technology, and already so much that’s being developed and improved. My role as a Business Analyst plays into that. It’s my job to take a holistic look at an IT system, identify options to improve or fix it, and present these to the business and developers.
Before I started, I didn’t know what a Business Analyst did. It’s been amazing to discover just how varied, interesting and fast-paced the role is. There’s lots of problem solving, which I love. It’s also really collaborative, which surprised me. But given the complexities, it really does take a village to build an IT system.
There’s so much to get involved in at Aviva. It’s not the super serious, corporate environment you might expect. I’ve helped to organise a monthly update for everyone in my part of our business and I’m currently shadowing the Generations Gen Z committee, who run events, conduct research, and represent each generation and their needs within the workplace. It’s such an enjoyable place to work and that’s down to the people and culture.
