Data is a hot career choice right now. But some people still think that data professionals are all boffins working in stuffy back rooms. This may be true elsewhere, but certainly not at Aviva. If you’re curious and passionate about what data can do, then this could be the route for you.
The hundreds of data professionals who work with us are crucial to the on-going success of our organisation. They’re playing an increasingly high-profile and influential role. Join us as an Apprentice and that could be you too!
Applications are open for Norwich only.
Apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers. Our apprentices come from all walks of life and age groups. While some join straight from school or college, many are career changers looking for a fresh challenge or returning to the workplace after a career break. Some also join from other parts of Aviva.
What we offer all our apprentices is the chance to earn a salary while learning invaluable new skills and gaining professional qualifications. So, wherever you are in your working life, this is a great way to build a fantastic career.
Our Level 4 Apprenticeship will give you qualifications equivalent to a foundation degree and typically takes 18 months to complete. From there any further development will be designed specifically for you, including the opportunity to study for a Level 7 Degree Apprenticeship, which would see you gain a qualification equivalent to an MSc degree.
On the programme, you’ll learn on the job, gaining real-life experience as you work towards your professional qualifications.
You’ll be empowered to own your work, but don’t worry. We won’t expect you to be an expert from day one. Or even month one. You’ll have a supportive team around you who’ll be there to help you develop, every step of the way.
With some 18 million UK customers and 325 years of experience, we have one of the broadest and deepest data sets in the financial services industry. Within that data, lies the answers to every question, the solutions to every problem, and the clues that will lead us to every new and exciting opportunity.
The truth is, data – and how we use it to better serve our customers and make smarter business decisions – will be one of the most important aspects of our long-term strategy. If you join us as an apprentice, you’ll be right at the heart of it all.
You might think we’re just another boring insurance firm, but we’re not. We don’t show up for work in pressed suits and shiny shoes. At Aviva, we’re proud to be different. Proud to say that we’re a diverse mix of cultures, genders, ages, perspectives, and ideas.
Most important of all, we’re an organisation with a purpose. We want to lead the way forward in our sector, which is why we focus on being the best we can be. Every day. Together, we’re building a better tomorrow with a little help – a lot, actually – from our apprentices!
No matter who you are, where you’re from, or what your interests are, you can be sure there’s a place for you at Aviva. We’re passionate and committed, just like you are; we’re the first major insurer worldwide to target Net Zero carbon by 2040 and we’re committed to the community too – we’re aiming for £10bn UK infrastructure and real estate investment during 2023. We’ve also invested $10 million in an innovators lab fund to help support female entrepreneurs in the fintech industry.
Expect a workplace centred around people – you, your colleagues, and of course, our customers.
At Aviva, if you are interested in Data, there are a number of different roles you could start in. Wherever you begin your Aviva journey, you’ll be joining a community known as ‘Quantum’.
Quantum is Aviva’s global data community – created to ensure Aviva is at the leading edge of data techniques and expertise to drive industry-disrupting, frictionless customer experiences.
Quantum is all about sharing knowledge and drawing on each other’s expertise. This is particularly valuable at the start of your career when you can gain ongoing development support, learn from and collaborate with colleagues in other areas of the business, and even other countries.
As an Apprentice, you’ll be given dedicated study time to attend classes, complete exercises, and undertake projects, all with the support of your team who will be rooting for you to do well.
There are lots of different types of data roles that specialise in different areas. Your apprenticeship will ensure you learn the core fundamentals and will give you a great grounding into a wide variety of data principles and practices.
Below are some of the exciting role types that you might embark on.
Use all kinds of scientific methods, processes, algorithms, and systems to extract knowledge and insights from data.
Be part of the team responsible for designing and building the systems we use to collect, store, and analyse data.
Focus on how we analyse and visualise information to help make smarter business decisions.
Work closely with colleagues internally to answer questions and make decisions about the products and services we provide.
Our Data Apprenticeship roles are based in our Norwich office.
It is likely that you’ll balance time in the office with working from home. We call this Smart Working. Three days in the office, and two days from home is a very typical example, but will vary between teams. When you join us, your leader will take time to discuss this with you and agree what works best for you, your team, and the organisation.
But it’s important to note, as we do this office/home blend you will need to live in commutable distance to our Norwich office. That way you will get to spend time with your team in person, as well as virtually, and get access to the right internal support networks to help you to succeed.
So, you may need to be flexible and willing to relocate if you don’t currently live within commuting distance.
Norwich is quaint, with many a cobbled alleyway meandering off the main streets. In 2020, the city was named as one of the UK’s Best Places to Live by The Sunday Times, so it’s a great time to join us in this lively city in eastern England.
As a rule of thumb, to study a Level 4 Apprenticeship you’ll:
An understanding or experience of data and technology, whether through your studies or as an outside passion for self-learning, would be a bonus. And so would experience of Python, R or SQL programming – but this is not essential as training will be provided. As long as you are passionate to learn, we can teach you the rest.
You’ll also be a confident communicator with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a love of learning and a commitment to continually developing yourself.
What would happen if women were encouraged to explore STEM in the same way that men are? Let these 6-8 year olds show you.
Our applications are open from January until the end of February and we’ll be holding our assessments in April/May 2023. We’ll want to hear about your problem-solving and communication skills, and your passion for data too. And it goes without saying you’ll need to feel a connection with our values. Sounds good? Great. Here’s what you need to do.
Life with us means being empowered. Empowered to do great work. Empowered to be yourself. And, in Data, empowered to help shape what we do, and how.
Up for it?
