About the programme

Apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers. Our apprentices come from all walks of life and age groups. While some join straight from school or college, many are career changers looking for a fresh challenge, or returning to the workplace after a career break. Some also join from other parts of Aviva.

What we offer all our apprentices, is the chance to earn a salary as they learn invaluable new skills and gain professional qualifications. So, wherever you are in your working life, this is a great way to build a fantastic career.

Depending on the programme, our apprenticeships last between 18 months and four years. Our Level 3 Apprenticeship will give you qualifications equivalent to A-Levels and our Level 4 Apprenticeships will give you qualifications equivalent to a foundation degree. And if you join the Level 6 Apprenticeship you’ll achieve a Bachelor degree. Whichever programme you participate in, you’ll learn on the job, gaining real-life experience as you work towards your professional qualifications.

You’ll be empowered to own your work, but don’t worry. We won’t expect you to be an expert from day one. Or even month one. You’ll have a supportive team around you who’ll be there to help you develop, every step of the way.

We have lots of different roles in our technology teams for apprentices. For ease, we’ve grouped them into ‘routes’. All you need to do is choose the route that best suits your skills, interests and aspirations. Previous experience in these roles isn’t essential. So, when choosing, think about your strengths, the types of tasks you enjoy doing, and we can teach you the rest.

Our IT Support team plays a crucial role in ensuring our colleagues have expertise on hand to help with their technology issues. They troubleshoot, evaluate and implement fixes for a wide range of IT related issues and requests. Think Customer Service and IT Technical Support blended together!

Change & Transformation

Our Change & Transformation roles are suited to people who are naturally curious – big picture thinkers who aren’t afraid to challenge the status quo. If you enjoy organising, whether that’s information or people, and you like to influence thinking and the way things are done, this route could be a good match for you. These are all permanent roles – during your first 18-months you’ll spend 80% of your time gaining hands-on experience and 20% studying for your Level 4 Apprenticeship qualifications. Roles in this area include:

Business Analyst (Bristol, Norwich or York) – our Business Analysts capture requirements to drive solutions to meet customers’ needs, whilst being able to explain complex concepts and problems in a simple way. They analyse and evaluate business opportunities and identify areas for improvement. They also champion the use of technology to improve how we do things for our customers and our colleagues. As well as your Business Analysis Apprenticeship qualification you will also get a BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis.

Project Manager (Bristol, Norwich or York) – our Project Managers are experts in organising – both themselves and others! They are comfortable taking the lead in group situations and making sure that everyone is heard, ensuring things get done in the right way, on time and on budget. You’ll learn to act as an agent of change, driving success over a project’s lifecycle, from initial conception to delivery and handover. As well as your Project Manager Apprenticeship qualification, we will also support you to achieve the Association of Project Management (APM) Project Management Qualification (PMQ).

Programme Management Office (Norwich or York) – the PMO team plays a key role in supporting other business and technology colleagues to deliver strategic programmes that total hundreds of millions in value. Like a conductor of the symphony, you’ll provide the independent view that guides the delivery in the right direction. As well as your Project Manager Apprenticeship qualification, we will also support you to achieve the Association of Project Management (APM) Project Management Qualification (PMQ).

To join us in any of these roles you will:

Have at least five GCSEs or Scottish National 5s at A*-C or 9-4 grade (or equivalent), including English and Maths

Have, or be on track to achieve, at least three A-Levels at grades B, C, C or above (in England) OR four Highers at grades B, B, B, C or above (in Scotland) OR Level 3 and above equivalent qualifications

Be a force for change and improvement – whether it’s through your studies, your work experience, or your outside interests, we’ll want to see how you’ve helped make things better

You’ll also be a confident communicator with a love of learning and a commitment to continually developing yourself. As a natural problem solver, you’ll use your analytical skills to best serve our customers and employees. And it goes without saying that we’ll be looking for a genuine curiosity in technology.

Software Engineering & Testing

In our Software Engineering & Testing Apprentice roles you’ll develop tools that will underpin the technological transformation of our business. Our apprentices are key to helping us connect with customers and colleagues and give them a secure, reliable and engaging experience.

If you think logically, enjoy problem solving, are curious about how things work and have some knowledge of coding, this could be the pathway for you.

Software Tester / Test Engineer – Level 4 (Bristol, Norwich, or York) – our Software Testers ensure that our software is fit for purpose, resilient and secure. You will work to identify any issues, gaps, glitches or missing elements so that our customers and colleagues have a seamless and trouble-free experience when using our products and applications. During your apprenticeship you will learn the fundamentals of test management best practices, how to use test automation tools and gain in depth knowledge of Behaviour Driven Development practices.

The Level 4 Software Tester Apprenticeship is equivalent to a foundation degree.

Software Engineer – Level 6 (Bristol, Norwich, or York) – our Software Engineers develop software for a wide range of our applications. They work to create new products and platforms as well as maintaining and enhancing our existing applications. If you choose this route, you will work collaboratively in small teams to build high quality solutions that meet our customers’ needs. You could be delivering technology change internally to meet the wider needs of our organisation or producing innovative digital tech like the award winning “My Aviva” customer portal.

The Level 6 Apprenticeship will see you gain a BSc Degree in Digital & Technology Solutions at the end of your studies.

To join us in these roles you will:

Have at least five GCSEs or Scottish National 5s at A*-C or 9-4 grade (or equivalent), including English and Maths

Have, or be on track to achieve, at least three A-Levels at grades B, C, C or above (in England) OR four Highers at grades B, B, B, C or above (in Scotland) OR equivalent Level 3 and above qualifications

Need an understanding or experience of coding, whether that’s as a part of your studies or as an outside passion through self-learning

You’ll also be a confident communicator with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a love of learning, and a commitment to continually developing yourself. You’ll also be a force for change and improvement who’ll be able to show us how you’ve helped make things better – whether it’s through your studies, your work experience, or your outside interests. And it goes without saying that we’ll be looking for a genuine curiosity in technology.

Cyber Security

Join us as a Cyber Security Analyst Apprentice, and you will learn the fundamentals to cyber security practices and how these can be applied to protect Aviva data, our customers and colleagues from cyber-attacks and website fraud.

If you enjoy analysing data, finding problems and if the prospect of hunting, detecting and blocking cyber criminals excites you, this could be the pathway for you.

Cyber Security Analyst – Level 4 (Bristol or Norwich)

Our Cyber Security Analyst Apprentices don’t wait for something bad to happen; they actively seek to anticipate and prevent Cyber-attacks by identifying any potential areas of weakness or vulnerability in our systems that could be used against us – and importantly how these can be remedied. They ensure that regular maintenance is performed on our security software monitoring tools and implement new functionalities and products as necessary to mitigate and minimise risks. They harness the power of data and use this to identify anomalies and make informed recommendations on the best course of action for the business to take.

Everyone at Aviva has a role to play in helping to minimise cyber-attacks, so our Cyber teams help to educate our colleagues on ways to protect themselves and our customers from being exploited by raising awareness of the ways that we can all help to prevent, spot and report incidents.

You will study for a Level 4 Cyber Security Technologist Apprenticeship which is equivalent to a foundation degree.

To join us in this role you will:

Have at least five GCSEs or Scottish National 5s at A*-C or 9-4 grade (or equivalent), including English and Maths

Have, or be on track to achieve, at least three A-Levels at grades B, C, C or above (in England) OR four Highers at grades B, B, B, C or above (in Scotland) OR equivalent Level 3 and above qualifications

You’ll also be a confident communicator who can explain technical concepts clearly and concisely. You’ll have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a love of learning, and a commitment to continually developing yourself. You’ll also be a force for change and improvement who’ll be able to show us how you’ve helped make things better – whether it’s through your studies, your work experience, or your outside interests. And it goes without saying that we’ll be looking for a genuine curiosity in technology and specifically Cyber Security.

IT Support

Join us an IT Support Apprentice and we will teach you how to provide a first-class service to customers. Ensuring everyone receives the support they require is a priority to the team.

You will be the first port of call for any technical queries and we will train you to help customers via multiple platforms such as the telephone, live chat and self-service channels.

You don’t need to have prior technical knowledge before applying, your training will cover everything you need to know, plus because we diligently standardise and document our support procedures for the applications, operating systems, hardware and mobile devices we use, you will have lots of resources on hand to refer to.

You will study for a Level 3 IT Solutions Technician Apprenticeship

To join us in this role you will:

Have at least five GCSEs or Scottish National 5s at A*-C or 9-4 grade (or equivalent), including English and Maths

You’ll also be a confident communicator who can explain technical concepts clearly and concisely. You’ll have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a love of learning, and a commitment to continually developing yourself.

Where you’ll be based

Our apprentice technology roles are in Bristol, Norwich, and York depending on the nature of the role. Not all role types are available in every location (see specific adverts for details), so you may need to be flexible and willing to relocate if you don’t currently live within commuting distance.

It’s likely that you’ll balance time in the office with working from home. We call this Smart Working. 3 days in the office, and 2 days from home per week is a very typical example, but will vary between teams. When you join us, your leader will take time to discuss this with you, and agree what works best for you, your team and the organisation.

It’s important to note that even though we work this office/home blend, you will need to live within commutable distance of one of the locations listed above. That way you’ll get to spend time with your team in person as well as virtually and get access to the right support networks internally to help you to succeed.

If you like your music, Bristol is the place for you. Hear the coolest musicians on the scene today at small, intimate gigs in lively bars across this cultured city. Or why not take a stroll along the canals and enjoy the colourful street art that brings Bristol to life?

Norwich is quaint, with many a cobbled alleyway meandering off the main streets. In 2020, the city was named as one of the UK’s Best Places to Live by The Sunday Times, so it’s a great time to join us in this lively city in eastern England.

Or join us in York, a charming cathedral city steeped in ancient Viking roots. Walled by ancient brick, it’s a beautiful place to live and work, so it’s no surprise that The Sunday Times rates it one of the best places to live in the UK (there is a theme going on here!).

What you’ll need

You’ll need certain qualifications depending on what level of apprenticeship you’re applying for. You can find all the details in the job advert for each role, but as a rule of thumb:

To study for a Level 3 Apprenticeship you’ll:

Have, or be on track for, at least five GCSEs or Scottish National 5s at A*–C grade or 9–4 (or equivalent), including English and Maths

To study for a Level 4 or Level 6 Apprenticeship you’ll:

Have, or be on track for, at least three A-Levels at grades B, C, C or above (England)

OR have, or be on track for, at least 4 Highers at grades B, B, B, C or above (Scotland)

OR Level 3 equivalent qualifications

You will also need to have at least five GCSEs or Scottish National 5s at A*–C grade or 9–4 (or equivalent), including English and Maths

Most importantly, you’ll be naturally curious and excited about using innovative technologies to make life better and more rewarding for customers and employees alike.

Software Engineer

Having worked in several call centre roles while I studied, I initially joined Aviva as a Customer Advisor. Once here, I soon found opportunities to get experience in areas that interested me – I like spotting relationships between facts and puzzling things out.

I didn’t think I’d get this job, but thought it looked interesting and decided to apply anyway. I’d definitely encourage anybody interested in this type of role to give it a try, especially if they think they can’t because of their experience. An apprenticeship here is a great way to get an education and experience at the same time. So far, I’ve most enjoyed working with Aviva’s large databases, which is unlike anything I’ve done before.

Business Analyst

Since the age of 12, I’ve worked in jobs ranging from a football referee to a finance assistant. But I’ve always had a passion for technology. After completing my A Levels, I decided to do an apprenticeship because they allow for practical learning as well as leading to recognised qualifications.

My technical knowledge wasn’t the strongest, which worried me slightly because I associated technology with high level coding. But my interest and willingness to learn has been more than enough. I’ve grown to enjoy my role more and more – I’m learning about many different areas of the business and advising on how to improve our processes.

Apprentice Software Engineer

Even though I’ve grown up around technology, I didn’t have a strong tech background. But that hasn’t stopped me from thriving in software engineering at Aviva.

I actually joined the company 5 years ago. I’d heard about how good the work culture was, so I took on a call centre role in which I soon became the go-to person if people had IT issues. I even created a triage-style form that really saved time when resolving IT issues. I guess that’s what led me to realise that IT and problem-solving interested me, so I applied for this apprenticeship.

Now I’m in a role in which I’m learning from experienced people and being challenged every day. There’s a lot to learn, but the huge support network here means you’re never alone.

Apprentice Business Analyst

I always had my heart set on a career in finance. Having gained A-levels in Business, Finance and Politics, I knew I wanted a role in which I’d continue learning by gaining hands-on experience. Then, after completing an IT course, I realised I had a passion for technology too.

So I looked for a career that gave me a mix of the two and found it at Aviva. I’d heard so many good things about the work and culture here, so I chose this apprenticeship. I’ve already developed a huge variety of hard and soft skills through identifying things that aren’t working well and developing solutions that improve things.

Since joining, every single person I’ve met has been so welcoming and happy to show me how things are done. It means I feel confident in sharing any ideas I have with my team.

Aryan Jain

Software Engineer

I had a dilemma deciding my next move after A-Levels. I wanted to study a BSc in Computer Science, but I also wanted to work on real problems and build tech that actual consumers would use. When I came across the apprenticeship at Aviva, it was the perfect fit. I get to study for a degree, graduate without any debt, and gain lots of real work experience as I do.

I support my team to deploy and maintain data analytics tools. I help to ensure our customers’ data is safe and delivers meaningful insights for our business. Aviva is pioneering the use of AI and machine learning in the insurance industry, and I’ve wanted to learn about these areas for a long time. Plus, everyone gets a say on how things are done. I’m able to put forward my ideas and, if they’re feasible, they’re incorporated.

Application process

Our applications are open from January until the end of February and we’ll be holding our assessments in April or May 2023. We’ll want to hear about your problem-solving and communication skills, and your passion for technology too. And it goes without saying you’ll need to feel a connection with our values. Sounds good? Great. Here’s what you need to do.

Step one – Apply online

The initial online application involves attaching a copy of your CV and answering a short questionnaire about your motivations for this programme. We want to hear about what you enjoy doing, what you are good at, and of course, it goes without saying that you’ll need to feel a connection to our values.

Step two – Online tests

If you’re shortlisted, the next stage is our online testing. We ask everyone to complete a numerical reasoning test. If you are someone who likes to prepare, you’ll be pleased to know you can do a practise test before attempting the real thing.

Step three – Telephone interview

If you pass the online tests, you will have a telephone interview with a member of our recruitment team. They will want to learn some more about you and explore your motivations for choosing a role at Aviva a little more. This is your opportunity to ask us questions too – after all this is a two-way process.

Step four - Assessment centre

Our last stage is an assessment day, where you will get to show what you can do! It’s your opportunity to get insights into what it’s like to work at Aviva and to meeting some of the people who work here. You’ll get to take part in a group exercise where you’ll collaborate with others to solve a challenge. You’ll also be interviewed and do some individual exercises.

These assessment days are “strengths-based” so we will be looking to understand more about what you like doing and your potential for the future. We promise they are actually quite enjoyable!

Step five - Offer

Impress us and you’ll be offered the role to start in September 2023. We will keep in contact with you between the time you receive your offer and start in your role, and you can expect a warm welcome in September when you’ll join a structured induction programme will your new fellow apprentices.
