Accountancy. What’s it all about?

It’s all about number crunching, right? Nope. Not at Aviva. Join us as a graduate in accountancy, and you’ll have a direct role to play in deciding what we do now – and where we go next. Yes, accountancy does involve looking at the figures. We’re a heavily-regulated industry after all. But it’s also about solving problems. Thinking strategically. Being a very important part of a market-leading, FTSE 100 company.

Our accountants are influential, playing a key part in the decisions we make, the policies we produce and the way that we work. This is your chance to join them. To help steer the UK’s largest insurer towards even greater success.

Number crunching is for calculators

Accountancy is for pioneers. For people who like to think commercially. Strategically. It’s for people who want to shape tomorrow. To be a force for good. Join us to make your mark. And build a brilliant career.

What you’ll be doing

Every decision we make, every policy we produce, every idea about how we work – you’ll influence them all. Along the way, we’ll give you everything you need to become a well-rounded chartered accountant. Get ready for a broad and detailed grounding in the world of commercial accounting. Get ready to explore the unexpected.

What you can expect

This three year scheme will see you undertaking one-year placements across different finance teams, including Financial Reporting & Controls, Business Partnering, Taxation and Investments. At the end of the three years, you’ll be a fully-qualified accountant – and a leader in the making.

What you’ll get

Where you’ll be based

You’ll be based in either York or Norwich during your training. They’re both vibrant cities and towns with big communities of ex-students. York is full of history and character – it even has its very own Viking Centre. These days York has its fair share of visitors and it’s also home to a vibrant mix of professionals who probably had something to do with the city being named one of the best places to live by The Sunday Times in 2018. Norwich is a fantastic city too – also steeped in history. It’s super easy to explore on foot and has a beautiful river at its heart. And they both have great offices with fantastic onsite facilities.

But as lovely as our offices are, you might not need to be there every day. We trust our employees to think for themselves. We create a space where everyone feels comfortable speaking up. We all seek out views that oppose our own. We empower each other to think creatively to solve problems, to make crucial decisions. To work in a way that suits us. That’s why we have Smart working, it’s the chance to work from home for some of your working hours, if the placement you are in can support this.

After you qualify, you’ll have the chance to be based in any of our UK offices, and who knows, think big and you could see you yourself in any number of our global offices too.

What you’ll need

We’re looking for people who have at least a 2:1. In any subject. We’re big believers that great accountants aren’t just about numbers (you will need a good aptitude for them though). Mostly, we look for people who can bring the kind of fresh perspectives and new ideas that will help us to thrive. If you’re commercial, strategic and keen to learn, get ready for a great career in a great company. We’ll also need you to bring at least 120 UCAS points from three A-Levels (excluding General Studies) – or equivalent.

How to apply

Our applications are open from October until 13th December and we’ll be holding our assessments early in 2021. We’ll want to hear about your leadership, problem-solving and communication skills, and your initiative too. And it goes without saying you’ll need to feel a connection with our values. Sounds good? Great. Here’s what you need to do now:

  • Make an online application – this will include answering a short questionnaire about your motivations and attaching your CV
  • If shortlisted, you’ll be sent some online numerical and reasoning tests that you will need to complete
  • Pass those and you’ll have a video interview – with the opportunity for you to ask us questions too!
  • And if you do well, there’s a virtual assessment day
  • Impress us there and you will be offered the role
