Technology Internships

We see your spark.

Find a placement that exceeds your expectations.

Technology. See where your strengths can take you.

We have been in business for over 325 years. Two things we’ve learned during this time? Never rest on your laurels and always look for ways to innovate and improve. That’s why tech, cyber security and change drive our business, enabling us to put our customers at the centre of everything we do and to keep everyone safe.

We have a variety of 10-week summer internship placements available for students in the penultimate year of their undergraduate degree, or for those already in their final year and doing a one-year Master’s degree from September 2024.

Whichever internship interests you; you can rest assured it’ll be a great opportunity to gain a deeper insight into the tech, change delivery and cyber security worlds while getting a head start on your future career. The work you do will be interesting and challenging, and you’ll do it with the full support of our brilliant technology, cyber security and change community.

And the great thing is, you don’t need to be a tech expert (or even be studying it) to make the most of it. Instead, we look for people who understand the impact technology can have and are eager to make change happen while keeping our colleagues, 18.7 million customers and Aviva safe.

Grow with us

We’re looking to find and develop the tech and change delivery stars of the future.

Our summer internship placements will put you at the heart of these teams, where you’ll gain invaluable on-the-job experience while learning from experts.

You’ll also be empowered to be yourself, to take control of your own work and your development.

Our internships are designed to be a pipeline into our Graduate Programmes. After successful completion of your placement, you may be offered a permanent graduate role starting with us in September 2025 (after successful completion of your course).

Why Aviva?

You might think we’re just another boring insurance firm, but nothing could be further from the truth. We don’t show up for work in pressed suits and shiny shoes. At Aviva, we’re proud to be different. Proud to say that we’re a diverse mix of cultures, genders, ages, perspectives, and ideas.

Most important of all, we’re an organisation with a purpose. We want to lead the way forward in our sector, which is why we focus on being the best we can be. Every day. Together, we’re building a better tomorrow with a little help — a lot, actually — from our placement students and graduates.

No matter who you are, where you’re from, or what your interests are, you can be sure there’s a place for you at Aviva. We’re passionate and committed, just like you are. We’re the first major insurer worldwide to target Net Zero carbon by 2040 and we’re committed to the community too — we’re aiming for £10bn UK infrastructure and real estate investment by the end of 2023. We’ve also invested $10 million in an innovators lab to help support female entrepreneurs in the fintech industry.

What you can expect

Expect a workplace centred around people — you, your colleagues and of course, our customers. An environment where technology has a big role to play and makes a real and meaningful difference to our colleagues and our 18.7 million customers.

Expect the kind of practical, hands-on experience that no amount of classroom-based learning could replace. Real-world experience that puts the theory into practice and demonstrates the importance of the work you do.

And expect the kind of support that will spur you on to be the best that you can be as you grow your expertise.

Which internship pathway is for you?

We’ve got a number of placements across our Technology teams. For ease, we have grouped them into two pathways. All you need to do is choose the pathway that best suits your skills, interests, and aspirations.

And remember, you don’t need previous technology experience or even to have studied tech at university either. So, when choosing, think about your strengths and the types of tasks you enjoy doing, and we can teach you the rest!

Your application will be for the whole pathway. We ask you to keep an open mind about role preferences because, throughout the recruitment process, we’ll be looking to understand which role we think will suit you best. That said, if you have a preference, you can let us know.

Where you’ll be based

We have Tech Change Delivery internship opportunities in our Norwich and York offices. Our Cyber Security internships are based in our Norwich offices only. As not all roles are available in every location, you may need to be flexible about where you work and be willing to relocate if you don’t currently live within commuting distance of the relevant office. You can find out more about each location by clicking the links below.

Wherever you’re based, the likelihood is you’ll balance time in the office with working from home. We call this Smart Working. Three days in the office and two days from home is typical, but this will vary between teams. When you join us, your leader will take time to discuss this with you, and agree what works best for you, your team, and the business.

As we adopt this Smart Working approach, it’s important to note that you will still need to live within commuting distance of the relevant office. That way you’ll get to spend time with your team in person, as well as virtually, and get access to the right internal support networks to help you to succeed.

What you’ll need

To be considered for a 10-week summer internship placement with us in any of our roles you’ll need to:

  • Be a penultimate year student, studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (in any subject), with one year of study remaining after the internship
  • Be intending to return to university for your final year of study after the placement
  • Be available to work full time (35 hours per week) for the full duration of the internship (2nd July – 6th September 2024)
  • Have right to work in the UK for the duration of the internship whether that be on a permanent basis, or with a visa that would allow you to work 35 hours per week. We are unable to offer sponsorship for anyone requiring sponsorship by Aviva due the roles not meeting the requirements set out by the home office

Across both pathways, we’re looking for people who are motivated to drive real change and make a positive impact for our colleagues and customers, keeping them safe. You’ll be a confident communicator with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and a love of learning — committed to continually developing yourself. You’ll also have an analytical mind and talent for problem solving as well as an eagerness to question existing ways of doing things. And it goes without saying we’ll be looking for:

  • a genuine interest in Cyber Security for our cyber roles
  • a passion for technology, change, innovation and continual improvement for our Tech Change Delivery roles

Our summer internships are designed to be a feeder into our Graduate Programmes. After completion of the internship successful candidates may be offered the opportunity to return to us as a permanent graduate in September 2025 so we look for candidates who are interested in not only getting summer experience, but also those who are also looking to secure a future permanent role.
