Underwriting graduate pathway

Turning uncertainty into stability.

Find a career that brings out your spark.

Is Underwriting right for you?

You might know Aviva for our home or car insurance. But we offer all kinds of other  specialised products, services and expertise in areas like Contingency and Marine Insurance too.

Whatever the type of insurance, there are lots of factors that affect how much it costs. This includes the type of cover being provided, the likelihood of something bad happening, the value of what’s being insured, and the customer’s history of making claims in the past.

Our underwriting teams take all this, and more, into account. They assess whether it’s something we’d be comfortable to insure and, if so, how much we would charge our customer for it. So they are analytically minded, yes, but also brilliant negotiators and creative thinkers too. Sound like you?

If so, join us, turning uncertainty into stability for our 19.5 million customers.

You don’t need a degree in any particular area. We believe a talent for knowing what makes people tick, a passion for learning, and the confidence to make clear decisions are far more important. Whatever you studied, bring these qualities and we can teach you the rest.

What you can expect

You’ll train and grow with us, soaking up information from our underwriters, and gaining valuable experience. In order to assess risk, you have to have knowledge of all kinds of fascinating topics that have an impact on the products and services we provide. So your training could include learning about geopolitical issues, world trade, climate change, fine art, popular culture and more. You’ll learn about the financial mechanisms that underpin the whole process, too.

We will support you to progress toward receiving your licence to underwrite, at which point you will get a portfolio of your own to underwrite and develop. At the end of it all, you’ll be an experienced Underwriter, and a leader in-the-making, with the professional credentials and practical experience to build a great career.

And that’s not all, because in years one and two, you’ll also benefit from our supported central development programme, giving you everything you need to become a well-rounded professional and a future business leader.

Where you’ll be based

Our 2025 Underwriting Graduate roles will be based in London.

The likelihood is you’ll balance time in the office with working from home. We call this Smart Working. Three days in the office and two days from home is typical, but this will vary between teams. When you join us, your leader will take time to discuss this with you, and agree on what works best for you, your team, and the business.

Even with our Smart Working approach, it’s important to note you’ll still need to live within commuting distance of the relevant office. That way you’ll get to spend time with your team in person, as well as virtually, and get access to the right internal support networks to help you succeed.

What you’ll need

You’ll either already have a degree (in any subject) or be on track to graduate by the end of Summer 2025 and be available for full-time work from September 2025.

You’ll also need to be a quick learner, decisive, and good at building a rapport with others.

A passion for keeping abreast of world events is key. An interest in Geography, politics, world trade and subjects such as fine art will be key for the Marine role, and for the Contingency role an additional interest in artists, bands and events will set you up for success.

Show us your spark

That’s what we want to see. So, each stage of our application process is designed to bring out the best in you. Below is a step-by-step guide, which you’ll see varies slightly depending on the pathway you choose.
