Data graduate pathway

Get to the heart of the action.

Find a career that brings out your spark.

Is Data right for you?

Say the words ‘data professional’ and some people might think ‘backroom boffin’. This may be true elsewhere, but certainly not at Aviva.

The hundreds of data professionals who work with us are crucial to the ongoing success of our organisation. They’re playing an increasingly high-profile – and influential – role.

With over 19.5 million UK customers and 325 years of experience, we have one of the broadest and deepest data sets in the financial services industry. Within that data, lies the answers to every question, the solutions to every problem and the clues that will lead us to every new and exciting opportunity.

The truth is, data – and how we use it to better serve our customers and make smarter business decisions – will be one of the most important aspects of our strategy over the next ten years. If you join us as a graduate, you’ll be right at the heart of it all.

Salary: £32,500
Duration: Permanent role, with a two-year development programme
Locations: Bristol, Eastleigh, London, Norwich, Perth or York

What you can expect

At Aviva, there are a number of different areas available to explore for graduates interested in Data. But, you’ll likely be joining a community known as ‘Quantum’.

Quantum is Aviva’s global data community – created to ensure Aviva is at the leading edge of data techniques and expertise, driving industry-disrupting, frictionless customer experiences. It connects data-led colleagues across the business, allowing us to share best practice ideas, knowledge and expertise. As you can imagine, this is particularly valuable at the start of your career.

You’ll also have the chance to study for professional qualifications, including a higher-level data apprenticeship course that offers a more structured learning journey. Any further development will be designed specifically for you, including data apprenticeships up to Level 7 (Master’s degree level). If you do enrol, you’ll be given dedicated study time to attend classes, complete exercises, and undertake projects.

And that’s not all, because in years one and two, you’ll also benefit from our supported central development programme, giving you everything you need to become a well-rounded professional and a future business leader.

Where you’ll be based

We have Data opportunities in our Bristol, Eastleigh, London, Norwich, Perth and York offices. Not all roles are available in every location, so you might need to be flexible about where you work and be willing to relocate if you don’t currently live within commuting distance of the relevant office. You can find out more about each location by clicking the links below.

Wherever you’re based, the likelihood is you’ll balance time in the office with working from home. We call this Smart Working. Typically, it’s three days in the office and two days from home but this can vary between teams. When you join us, your leader will discuss this with you, and agree what works best for you, your team, and the business.

Even with our Smart Working approach, it’s important to note that you’ll still need to live within commuting distance of the relevant office. That way you’ll get to spend time with your team in person, as well as virtually, and have access to the right internal support networks to help you to succeed.

What you’ll need

You’ll either already have a degree or be on track to graduate by the end of Summer 2025. If you’ve studied a STEM subject, then great, but it’s not a requirement. A passion for numbers and information is. You’ll also need an analytical mind, a genuine passion for data and an interest in computing or technology.

Programming experience isn’t essential, but for some roles, an interest in developing these skills would be a benefit. And if you do already understand the basics of a popular programming language like Python, R or SQL, so much the better.

Most important, however, is that you love getting your head around complex problems, and you’re able to explain your solutions in ways that are easy to understand.

Show us your spark

That’s what we want to see. So, each stage of our application process is designed to bring out the best in you. Below is a step-by-step guide, which you’ll see varies slightly depending on the pathway you choose.
