Data graduate pathway

Get to the heart of the action.

Find a career that exceeds your expectations.

Data. What's it all about?

Say the words ‘data professional’ and some people might think ‘backroom boffin’. Which may be true elsewhere, but certainly not at Aviva.

The hundreds of data professionals who work with us are crucial to the on-going success of our organisation. They’re playing an increasingly high-profile – and influential – role.

With some 18 million UK customers and 325 years of experience, we have one of the broadest and deepest data sets in the financial services industry. Within that data, lies the answers to every question, the solutions to every problem and the clues that will lead us to every new and exciting opportunity.

The truth is, data – and how we use it to better serve our customers and make smarter business decisions – will be one of the most important aspects of our strategy over the next ten years. If you join us as a graduate, you’ll be right at the heart of it all.

Applications for the Data graduate pathway are now closed.

Grow with us

Unlike some organisations, when you join Aviva as a Data graduate, you’ll be taken on in a permanent role, doing real work with real responsibility from day one.

And when you consider the role that data has to play in building the relationships we share with our customers, you’ll understand what a responsibility that will be.

So delve with us into the detail, because hidden among the numbers is an amazing opportunity to make a real and meaningful difference to millions of people’s lives.

Why Aviva?

You might think we’re just another boring insurance firm, but we’re not. We don’t show up for work in pressed suits and shiny shoes. At Aviva, we’re proud to be different. Proud to say that we’re a diverse mix of cultures, genders, ages, perspectives and ideas.

Most important of all, we’re an organisation with a purpose. We want to lead the way forward in our sector, which is why we focus on being the best we can be. Every day. Together, we’re building a better tomorrow with a little help – a lot, actually – from our graduates.

No matter who you are, where you’re from or what your interests are, you can be sure there’s a place for you at Aviva. We’re passionate and committed, just like you are; we’re the first major insurer worldwide to target Net Zero carbon by 2040 and we’re committed to the community too – we’re aiming for £10bn UK infrastructure and real estate investment by the end of 2023.

What you can expect

At Aviva, there are a number of different areas available to explore for graduates interested in Data. But, you’ll likely be joining a community known as ‘Quantum’.

Quantum is Aviva’s global data community – created to ensure Aviva is at the leading edge of data techniques and expertise to drive industry – disrupting, frictionless customer experiences. Quantum connects data led individuals working across all business areas, markets, and product lines. Coming together as Quantum allows us to share data techniques more easily, rapidly re-use best practice ideas, and support the learning and development needs of our people.

Quantum is all about sharing knowledge and drawing on each other’s expertise. Which is particularly valuable at the start of your career, when you can gain ongoing development support, learn from and collaborate with colleagues in other areas of the business, and even other countries.

You’ll get the opportunity to study for professional qualifications, to add to your list of achievements. Including the opportunity to enrol on a higher-level data apprenticeship course that will provide you with a more structured learning journey.

Any further development will be designed specifically for you, including data apprenticeships up to level 7 (Master’s degree level). If you do enrol, you’ll be given dedicated study time to attend classes, complete exercises, and undertake projects.

Getting to know data

Don’t worry if you’re not sure what data at Aviva entails, there are lots of different areas for you to explore. In fact, we encourage you to keep an open mind. You’ll be able to realise where your strengths are best suited and figure out the route that’s best for you.

Data Science & Advanced Analytics

Here, you’ll use all kinds of scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge and insights from data.

Data Engineering

Here, you’ll be part of the team responsible for designing and building the systems we use to collect, store, and analyse data.

Reporting & Business Intelligence

Join this team and your work will focus on how we analyse and visualise information to help make smarter business decisions.

Data Analysis

In this team, you’ll work closely with colleagues internally to answer questions and make decisions about the products and services we provide.

Where you’ll be based

We have Data opportunities in our Bristol, Eastleigh, London, Norwich and York offices. Not all graduate roles are available in every location, so you may need to be flexible about where you work and, possibly, willing to relocate if you don’t currently live within commuting distance.

You’ll probably balance time in the office with working from home. We call this Smart Working. Three days in the office, and two days from home is a very typical example, but this will vary between teams. When you join us, your leader will take time to discuss this with you, and agree what works best for you, your team and Aviva.

But it’s important to note, as we do this office/home blend you will need to live in commutable distance to once of the locations listed above. That way you will get to spend time with your team in person, as well as virtually, and get access to the right internal support networks to help you to succeed.

What you’ll need

You will either already have a degree or be on track to graduate by the end of Summer 2024. If you have studied a STEM related subject then great, but it’s not a requirement. A passion for numbers and information is. You’ll also have an analytical mind, a genuine passion for data and an interest in computing or technology.

Programming experience isn’t essential but for some roles an interest in developing these skills would be a benefit. And if you do already understand the basics of a popular programming language like Python, R or SQL, then great!

Most important, however, is that you love getting your head around complex problems, and you’re able to explain

What you’ll get

Application process

During the application process, we’ll want to hear about what you enjoy doing and what you are good at. And it goes without saying you’ll need to feel a connection with our values.

Sounds good? Great. Here’s what you need to do now.

If we can help to make the process smoother for you with any additional support or reasonable adjustments, please just let us know by emailing avivaearlycareers@aviva.com.
