We have 12-month placements available in our Actuarial team for students in their penultimate year at university. If you join us, you’ll gain lots of experience and skills. The work you do will be interesting and challenging, and you’ll have the full support of our brilliant Finance community.

Salary:  £26,500

What you can expect

Our Year in Industry placements are within the Financial and Regulatory Reporting team and the Group Actuarial and Capital Change team. You’ll have real responsibility for tasks and decisions that will affect our business. The work includes:

  • production of Solvency II and IFRS results for existing and new business
  • updating complex spreadsheets and code, checking their inputs, and analysing the results
  • understanding MS Excel formulae, and investigating issues in R code and in our data
  • identifying areas of the process that could be improved and improving them

Expect a workplace centred around people – you, your colleagues and of course, our customers. An environment where Actuaries have a big role to play and make a real and meaningful difference to our colleagues and our 20.5 million customers.  You’ll be empowered to be yourself, take control of your work and your development. You’ll get practical, hands-on experience that no amount of classroom-based learning could match. Real-world experience that puts the theory into practice and shows the importance of the work you do.

In addition to your line manager, you’ll have a buddy within the team to support you and an actuarial qualified mentor who will work with you throughout the year, offering additional guidance and coaching.

A bit about us

We’re the UK’s leading diversified insurer and we help 20.5 million customers in the UK, Ireland, and Canada. Whether it’s for a small bump in the car or saving for a comfortable retirement, our customers rely on us to be there for them when they need us most.

We’re deeply invested in our people, our customers, our society, and the planet. We exist to be with people when it really matters, throughout their lives. We do this by focusing on what matters to them most and helping our customers solve the financial puzzles in their lives. We’re with them in the moment, and we’re thinking about what they need for tomorrow too.

Our values bring to life what it means to work here: commitment, care, community, and confidence.

It means you’ll be joining a culture where you’re trusted to think for yourself. Where you can feel comfortable speaking up. Where you can think creatively to solve problems and make real change. And where everyone works to bring out the best in each other so we can help build a more positive future for our customers and communities.

Where you’ll be based

We have Actuarial Year in Industry opportunities in our York and Bristol offices.

Wherever you’re based, the likelihood is you’ll balance time in the office with working from home. We call this Smart Working. Typically, it’s three days in the office and two days from home but this can vary between teams. When you join us, your leader will discuss this with you, and agree what works best for you, your team, and the business.

Even with our Smart Working approach, it’s important to note that you’ll still need to live within commuting distance of the relevant office. That way you’ll get to spend time with your team in person, as well as virtually, and have access to the right internal support networks to help you to succeed.
