Technology & Change Delivery Year In Industry Placements

Switch on.

Spark your passion for a career in tech.

Technology and Change Delivery. See where your strengths can take you.

With two routes to choose from, our Year in Industry placements can help you explore the exciting opportunities a career in the fast-paced and ever-changing world of technology can offer.

And the great thing is, you don’t need to be a tech expert (or even be studying it) to make the most of it. Instead, we look for people who are naturally curious and big picture thinkers. People who understand the impact technology can have and are eager to make change happen.

Applications for the Technology & Change Year in Industry Placements are now closed.

Grow with us

We’re looking to find and develop the tech & change delivery stars of the future.

Our placements will put you at the heart of our Technology and Change teams, where you’ll gain invaluable experience learning from industry experts. As your skills and experience grow, there’ll be lots of development opportunities to take advantage of, so you’ll finish your year with the foundations you need to succeed.

You’ll be empowered to be yourself. To take control of your own work and your development. Show us what you can do, and we’ll be right behind you, giving you more and more responsibility and opportunities to shape your future and that of the industry.

Our placements are designed to be a great introduction to our Graduate Programmes. Once you successfully complete your placement, you may be offered a permanent graduate role starting with us in 2026 (after your studies are completed).

Why Aviva?

We have been in business for over 325 years. Two things we’ve learned – never rest on your laurels and always look for ways to innovate and improve. That’s why tech, data, and change drive our business, enabling us to put our customers at the centre of everything we do.

Most important of all, we’re an organisation with a purpose. We want to lead the way forward in our sector, which is why we focus on being the best we can be. Every day. Together, we’re building a better tomorrow with a little help – a lot, actually – from our placement students.

No matter who you are, where you’re from, or what your interests are, you can be sure there’s a place for you at Aviva. We’re passionate and committed, just like you are; we’re the first major insurer worldwide to target Net Zero carbon by 2040 and we’re committed to the community too – we’re aiming for £10bn UK infrastructure and real estate investment by the end of 2023. We’ve also invested $10 million in an innovators lab to help support female entrepreneurs in the fintech industry.

What you can expect

Expect a workplace centred around people – you, your colleagues and of course, our customers. An environment where technology has a big role to play and makes a real and meaningful difference to our colleagues and our 18 million customers.

Expect the kind of practical, hands-on experience that no amount of classroom-based learning could replace. Real-world experience that puts the theory into practice and demonstrates the importance of the work you do.

And expect the kind of support that will spur you on to be the best that you can be, as you grow your expertise.

Which route is for you?

We have different industry placements available across our Technology teams. For ease, they’re grouped into two routes. So, all you need to do is choose the route that best suits your skills, interests, and aspirations.

And remember, you don’t need previous technology experience or even to have studied technology at university (although you’ll need some coding experience if applying for Data Engineering). So, when choosing, think about your strengths, the types of tasks you enjoy doing, and we can teach you the rest!

Where you’ll be based

Depending on the route you choose, you’ll be based in either our Bristol or Norwich office. Not all roles are available in every location, so you may need to be flexible about where you work and be willing to relocate if you don’t currently live within commuting distance of the relevant office. Find out more about each location using the links below.

Wherever you’re based, the likelihood is you’ll balance time in the office with working from home. We call this smart working. Three days in the office and two days from home is typical, but this will vary between teams. When you join us, your leader will take time to discuss this with you and agree what works best for you, your team, and the business.

As we adopt this smart working approach, it’s important to note that you will still need to live within commuting distance of the relevant office. That way you’ll get to spend time with your team in person, as well as virtually, and get access to the right internal support networks to help you to succeed.

What you’ll need

To apply to our Technology and Change Delivery industry placements, you need to:

  • be studying for an undergraduate degree (in any subject)
  • be on a course that supports a placement year
  • be available to work full-time (35 hours per week) from July 2024 to the end of June 2025
  • be intending to return to university for your final year of study after the placement (graduating in 2026).

Across both routes, we’re looking for people who are motivated to drive real change and make a positive impact for our colleagues and customers. You’ll need:

  • a genuine passion for technology, innovation, and continual improvement
  • an analytical mind and talent for problem solving
  • an eagerness to question how things are done
  • a love of learning and the drive to keep developing yourself.

If you’re applying for a Data Engineering role, you’ll also need some coding experience (SQL or Python preferable but not essential) whether gained as part of your studies or as an outside passion. You don’t need any tech experience for other roles.
